On February 3, 2012, three undergraduate students of Babson College,
Benny Tang, Dennis Wong, and Diana Yuan reached out to the Central Office of Delta Sigma Pi inquiring about the possibility of bringing the fraternity to campus. This was quickly picked up by Dale Clark, Director of Chapter and Expansion Services, along with New England Regional Vice President Patrick Johnson and to-be District Director Richard Steinkrauss. However, while Central Office was ready to push forward with the reactivation of the Gamma Upsilon Chapter, college administration was hesitant about starting any Greek organizations at the time since there were already four Interfraternity Conference (IFC) fraternities and three Panhellenic (PanHel) Council sororities on campus. The key selling point for Delta Sigma Pi was that it was a Professional Business Fraternity, and Babson College, an all business school, lacked one. On March 3, 2012, the three co-founders met with Richard Steinkrauss and Jon Lee for the first time at the Starbucks Coffee in Linden Square where plans were formally laid out for how to proceed. On March 9, 2012, the Letter of Intent for New Colony with full signatures of support was completed and sent in to the Central Office. Within three weeks, Babson College administration had unofficially approved of the reactivation effort. With their silent consent given, recruiting slowly began by word-of-mouth and distribution of brochures to interested students. On March 31,2012, Benny Tang and Dennis Wong attended the C7 Summit at Boston University where they met brothers from the New England Region, including Gamma, Theta Iota, Xi Psi, Pi Rho Chapters and the Boston Alumni Chapter. The Central Office officially recognized the starting of the Delta Beta Delta Colony on April 18, 2012, named after the three co-founders. On April 21, 2012, the three co-founders attended Lambda Tau’s 25th Anniversary celebration, where they met the original founders of Lambda Tau. Inspired by this experience, the Colony held its first informal meeting on May 3, 2012 in a residence hall common room (unregistered organizations were not allowed to book community spaces!) with soda and pizza provided. Twenty-six students turned up to listen to Richard Steinkrauss present about the fraternity. Over the summer, with sufficient interest from the student body, members of the Executive Committee remained in contact, including a Skype conference call, to plan for the Fall 2012 semester in order to hit the ground running. Finally, on July 24, 2012, the Office of Student Activities & Leadership signed off on the Chapter Reactivation Reply, officially authorizing Delta Sigma Pi to reactivate a chapter on Babson’s campus. At the Student Organization Carnival, held on September 1, 2012, the Delta Sigma Pi booth attracted ninety seven interested students. Capitalizing on this success, the Executive Committee organized a formal information session on September 7, 2012, presenting alongside brothers of the Boston Alumni Chapter, and then meeting with Dale Clark the next day. On September 19, 2012, the first Colony General Meeting was held, and in the space of the next five months (including Winter Break), Delta Beta Delta Colony completed all of the requirements of a Colony, including nine Professional Activities, six Community Service Activities, and raising the necessary funds with almost five dozen petitioning members, culminating with the completion of this petition on February 6, 2013. On February 20th, 2013 the Delta Sigma Pi Board of Directors approved our Petition to reactivate the Gamma Upsilon Chapter at Babson College. On April 6th, 2013 we held the re-activation ceremony of the Gamma Upsilon chapter. |
